Haiti Flag Day

A little girl shows her pride with her flag during the Haitian Flag celebrations in Montrouis, Haiti.

We had just finished feeding the school children when I saw this beautiful little girl standing alone in the schoolhouse doorway with her flag.

Schools for Haiti maintains multiple schools in Western Haiti. This amazing organization educates the teachers, maintains the schools and also feeds the children. Visit them at schoolsforhaiti.com and see how you can make a difference.

Take A Number

An old man crouches by the side of the road holding on to his script number waiting for his turn to see the doctors. He is just one of the 150 people the Hearts Afire Medical team saw today at their clinic in Chippalapalem, India. This the third clinic hosted by Hearts Afire on their current mission.

Welcome To India

We have been traveling for two days, no showers, no sleep, airplane food, and no change of clothing. We are met at the airport by Pastor Sharath Bhushan his son and The last leg of our journey to Razole, India is a car ride two hours long from Hyderabad. We are running on fumes, but the sights and sounds of the journey (or it could be the roads and the constant horn blaring) keep me wide awake.

The roads that started with tarmac soon became roads that had once known tarmac. A little rough around the edges, and the middle for that matter. We wind our way through towns and villages until we enter Razole and come to our base camp, which is the home of the pastor, the children’s home and the church. We are greeted by children coming from the home and a large Pepsi truck filled with supplies that had been donated to the mission by Pepsi. What a welcome sight Aquafina!!!

No sooner had we got out of the cars a man was presented to Dr Vega with chest pains, a chest trauma and trouble breathing, after a quick examination we had to take him to a hospital for a better examination.

As we enter the hospital there is a radiologist who conducts an ultrasound of the patient’s heart and chest all for $9. It is decided that aspiration and tests were needed.

Before that could happen, the Dr asked Dr Vega and me to go to his house and meet his family. We are taken upstairs and given Cola, and watermelon and presented with two photo albums of their 12 year old daughter. Although it is a rather strange moment, it is a great honor to meet with them.

Now to work, back downstairs and to a small room with and old lamp and many people. The patient is sat don and prepped for the aspiration, he doesn’t seem to easy at this point and he grabs onto Dr Vega’s hand and kisses it in the hope of relief. The spiration is quick and successful, an I wait outside. In a moment I am handed a syringe, and asked to get on the back of a scooter and go to the lab 5 minutes away. The horns are blaring and the lights are bright, and the confusion of the traffic is overwhelming. We get there in one piece and hand off the sample and we head back to camp.

Day one done. How was your day?

The Journey Begins

I am sitting in the airport looking out at the most beautiful blue sky and my plane sitting waiting for the weather in New York to get it together. We have a connecting flight to Dubai at 11pm at JFK and right now we are told our flight will be leaving at 7pm and getting in at 10pm. Not much time!!!

Looking On

Looking On

This beautiful little girl stands on stones that separate the dirt floor in the home from the dirt floor outside. She is living in a village that has been without water for 45 days. Your giving enabled us to give them food, water, and clothing. We painted the church inside and out and shared the love of Christ with them. The church is in the process of drilling a new well for the village.

Thank you for all your giving, you are making a difference.

Hiding

This beautiful young girl takes refuge behind a palm while the “Americans” come to visit.

While we were visiting the orphanage Hogar Puente De Amistad (“Bridge of Friendship Home”) in El Canyon, an impoverished community in the outskirts of Managua, we went into the community to meet the people. This girl lives in a house that had been rebuilt by Hope Road Nicaragua after her home had burned down one Christmas.

Behind the Iron Curtain

Behind the Iron Curtain

Behind the Iron Curtain

Who is the one that will unlock his future?

Will it be you?

A boy waits outside a locked gate, waiting for a bag of rice and beans to feed his family. We throw away more food at a meal than he gets to eat all day.

You can make a difference, You do make a difference.

For only pennies a day you can feed a child. Will you?

Hangin’

A boy I had seen earlier came back to watch us. I had photographed earlier this year and he is featured in the blog named “The Look.” The look was the same, not really staring at me, but blankly through me. He was quiet, as before, and he just watched. He did not seem part of the other children running around and shouting, he just quietly watched.

Will I see him again?

Will he be waiting?
